Vocational Education Committees were established under the Vocational Education Act 1930. Vocational Education Committees represent a cross-section of educational, cultural, industrial, commercial, staff and parent interests. Vocational Education Committees administer Vocational Schools and Community Colleges which provide mainstream junior and senior cycle courses, as well as more specialised vocationally orientated options. Vocational Education Committees are also the major provider of Further Education which is a range of post- compulsory education and training options such as Post-Leaving Certificate courses (PLCs). Vocational Education Committees also deliver Youthreach Services, the Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme (VTOS), BTEI and Youth Services as well as being centrally involved in adult and community education, often in partnership with the voluntary sector.
The Vocational Education Committee consists of seventeen members. They represent the local authority, parents of students under 18 years of age, staff and a variety of community and education interests.
The VEC management structure consists of the Chief Executive Officer (Ted Owens) along with the Education Officer (John Fitzgibbons) and the Principal Office (John O’Regan). All other Service Managers including Schools, Colleges, Youthreach and Adult Education report to the Senior Management Team and the Committee.
